Cantore Choir
The Cantore Choir is an advanced choir for young people who have demonstrated a certain level of musicianship. This choir is generally entered after a period of training in the Prelude Choir, or by audition. Young people aged between 10 years and 20 years are welcome to audition for this group.
Cantore aims to develop the whole musician and to inspire young singers in their musical journey. Choristers enjoy a wide range of quality music that aims to broaden their musical knowledge and develop a rich musical appreciation. Repertoire includes many genres and styles of singing, both a cappella and accompanied, which includes folk, jazz, classical, spirituals, world music, and much more.
The program is a comprehensive and holistic approach to music education. Along with vocal production and performance skills, choristers study the language of music through Kodály-based teaching. Learning how to read and understand music is an important element that is incorporated into both rehearsal time and small group musicianship training. Sight-singing skills are fostered through the use of sol-fa and rhythm syllables.
The choir enjoys working with guest artists on various projects. In the past these have included choreography, creative movement, African drumming, improvisation and song-writing.
Many lifelong friendships are made in the Cantore Choir. It is a community of young people who are like-minded in their love of music and singing.
